The Management of the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET), Koroma/Saakpenwa, Ogoni, has paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, Dr. Bariere Thomas, at the Council Secretariat.

Speaking on behalf of the Pro-Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor of FUET, Professor Prince Chinedu Mmom, JP, DSSRS, described the visit as part of the University’s ongoing consultations with key stakeholders on the affairs of the newly established institution.

“Today’s meeting is a continuation of our ongoing engagements with stakeholders in the affairs of the new Federal University of Environment and Technology located here in Ogoni land. I bring warm felicitations to the Executive Chairman and the good people of Khana Local Government Area from the Council and Management of the University,” Prof. Mmom stated.

The Vice-Chancellor recalled that the Bill for the establishment of FUET was signed into law on February 3, 2025, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while the Governing Council was formally inaugurated on August 11, 2025, with Professor Don M. Baridam as Pioneer Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, and himself as Pioneer Vice-Chancellor. Other principal officers include Dr. Monday Douglas Mpigi (Registrar), Mr. Zoryii Josco Nwaimanie (Bursar), and Dr. Saghanen G. B. Ntogo (University Librarian).

Prof. Mmom further revealed that renovation of existing facilities had commenced as the University awaits approval of its academic programmes by regulatory agencies to begin formal academic activities — including the admission of pioneer students and the recruitment of staff.

He emphasized FUET’s mission to promote environmental remediation, technological advancement, academic excellence, and community development, noting that the University’s establishment in Ogoni land is historic and reflects the fulfillment of the people’s long-standing struggle for environmental justice and sustainable progress.

While appreciating the support of host communities, Prof. Mmom appealed to the Khana LGA Chairman for assistance in addressing specific needs, including the provision of a 150KVA soundproof generating plant and curbing the activities of land speculators around the University premises.

In his response, Dr. Bariere Thomas, the Executive Chairman of Khana LGA, described the establishment of FUET as a monumental milestone for Ogoni land and expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for making it a reality.

“Having very prominent scholars coming together to man this institution gladdens our hearts. As Khana people, we are stakeholders in this University. Considering us worthy of this visit is indeed the right step in the right direction. On behalf of the people and government of Khana, I assure you of our total support to make you succeed,” Dr. Thomas affirmed.

The Chairman also urged the University management to prioritize Khana indigenes in areas of manpower engagement, student admission, and local content in job opportunities.

He concluded by assuring the FUET delegation of the Council’s readiness to partner with the University for the greater good of the people and the overall development of Ogoni land.
