FUNAAB Beekeepers Embark on Bush Exercise to Boost Honey Production

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), has taken a significant step towards promoting apiculture and sustainable agriculture practices.

A team of dedicated beekeepers, led by Dr. Matthew Wheto and Mr. Abraham Fadeyi, recently embarked on a field expedition to trap honey bees in the university's bush terrain.

The team strategically placed bait hives, designed and donated by Wafroex, to attract and capture bee colonies. The exercise aims to boost honey production, support research, conservation, and capacity building in beekeeping.

Dr. Wheto highlighted the ecological and economic benefits of beekeeping, noting that honey bees play a critical role in pollination and biodiversity conservation. Mr. Fadeyi stated that the initiative would serve as a practical training platform for students and contribute to domesticating wild bee populations.

This proactive step by FUNAAB demonstrates its commitment to innovative and environmentally friendly agricultural practices, aligning with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
