The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has received three scholars from Liberia under a strategic regional partnership focused on strengthening agricultural development and Soil Science capacity in West Africa.

The initiative is a collaborative effort involving FUNAAB, the Liberian Government, and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). The programme is aimed at training a new generation of Soil Scientists equipped to improve agricultural productivity and sustainable land management in Liberia.
The scholars arrived at the university on May 25, 2026, and have been admitted into advanced academic programmes at FUNAAB’s Centre of Excellence in Agricultural Development and Sustainable Environment (CEADESE). Their area of specialisation will focus on Crop and Pasture Production as well as Sustainable Environment studies with emphasis on Soil Science.
The partnership followed months of planning and institutional engagement coordinated by Dr. Samuel Mesele, a Soil Scientist and Project Coordinator for Soils4Africa and Soils4Liberia at the Soil Management Unit of the IITA Liberia Country Office.
Speaking during a reception at the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, FUNAAB Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, urged the scholars to remain committed to the objectives of the programme and take full advantage of the academic opportunities available at the institution.
He stated that the programme was structured to provide the technical knowledge and practical training needed to support Liberia’s efforts toward restoring and sustaining soil resources for improved agricultural output.
Prof. Kehinde also assured the students of the university’s commitment to creating a conducive academic environment capable of making their academic stay productive and impactful.
Also speaking, the Bursar of the university, Mr. Olukayode Osinuga, pledged administrative support in addressing the scholars’ welfare and logistical needs.
Similarly, the Director of CEADESE, Prof. Adeboye Fafiolu, assured the students of access to quality research facilities, experienced lecturers, and a strong academic environment designed to promote research excellence and practical agricultural solutions.

The Liberian scholars, in separate remarks, expressed appreciation to FUNAAB, IITA, and the Government of Liberia for the opportunity, promising to justify the confidence placed in them through dedication and academic excellence.
The partnership is expected to strengthen academic and institutional relations between Nigeria and Liberia while contributing to efforts aimed at addressing the shortage of soil management specialists in Liberia and the wider West African region.
