FUNAAB Scholars Secure Patent for Breakthrough Eco-Friendly "Tripleshield Agro" Nano-Pesticide

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has reached a new frontier in agricultural technology with the successful patenting of Tripleshield Agro, an innovative, environmentally friendly nano-pesticide.

The product, developed by a research team led by Professor Akinola Popoola, was formally presented to the University Management on Tuesday, February 10, 2026. The innovation represents a major shift toward sustainable pest management, utilizing nanotechnology to address the toxic side effects of traditional chemical pesticides.

Developed in response to rising farmer concerns over environmental pollution and health risks—such as skin irritation and water contamination—Tripleshield Agro offers a high-tech alternative.

Targeted Delivery: The nano-pesticide delivers active ingredients directly to fungi, bacteria, and insects, significantly reducing chemical wastage compared to conventional broadcast spraying.

“Researchers must exercise caution when disclosing technical details publicly to avoid jeopardising ownership rights,” Prof. Idowu stated. He reaffirmed FUNAAB’s commitment to supporting large-scale field trials and the eventual commercialisation of the product through the Directorate of Research, Innovations and Partnerships (DRIP).

Beyond the patent, the research team distinguished itself nationally by ranking among the top three institutions at the 2025 TETFund TETFAIRINNOV8 Programme for its exceptional pitch deck.

The event was attended by key university officials, including Prof. Olawale Dairo (DVC Development), Prof. Bolarinwa Senjobi (Dean, COLPLANT), and other core researchers like Dr. Caroline Filani and Dr. Chioma Adekunle, marking a proud moment for FUNAAB’s contribution to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).
