The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) Red Cross Detachment has celebrated its 10th anniversary with a weeklong programme themed “Service Beyond Borders: FUTA Red Cross at 10.”

The event climaxed with a Passing Out Parade (POP) for new members and the swearing-in of new executives at the university’s Sports Complex on August 23, 2025.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Professor David Oke, described the anniversary as remarkable and commended the Red Cross Society for its humanitarian impact. “The Red Cross Society has been a beacon of hope and compassion, providing critical services such as blood donation drives, first-aid training, and disaster relief efforts. Their commitment to promoting humanitarian values and empowering individuals aligns perfectly with our institution’s mission,” he stated.

The Staff Adviser of the society, Dr. Gbenga Enisan, praised the dedication of members over the past decade. “This is a celebration of 10 years of service to humanity. We have produced over 400 students who have assisted the university in growth and progress. We have developed strategies and goals that have helped us move ahead, even though it has not been an easy task. Our students have been cooperative, and we commend the university management for their unwavering support,” he said.

Highlighting the activities of the detachment, the 2024/2025 Commandant, Ismail Olaoye, noted that members had been trained in essential and psychological first aid, provided medical standby at university events, supported registration at the university health centre, and organized several blood donation drives. He reflected on the society’s journey, saying, “Today we celebrate not just an end, but a journey defined by compassion, resilience, and service. Your legacy is written in every life you touched and every emergency you responded to.”

Representing the Ondo State Chapter, Trainer Taiwo Filani encouraged students to embrace Red Cross activities for personal growth, leadership, and service. “Together, we can make a meaningful impact and create a brighter future for all,” he added.

The colourful event also featured displays by Red Cross cadets, awards to outstanding members, and presentations highlighting the society’s achievements since its inception.
