FUTA VC Leads Display of Skills at Maiden Badminton Championship
The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) hosted its inaugural Badminton Championship from July 23 to 25, 2024. The event began with an exhibition match featuring Vice Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji and alumnus Alex Fapounda, showcasing impressive skills that captivated the audience.
The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) held its first-ever Badminton Championship from July 23 to 25, 2024, at the Indoor Sports Hall. The event kicked off with an exhibition match featuring the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, and alumnus Mr. Alex Fapounda, a 2017 World University Games participant. Their impressive skills captivated the audience and set the tone for the championship.

Sponsored solely by Professor Oladiji, the competition saw over 50 students from various schools participate. In the men's category, Fagite Perfect from the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (SAAT) emerged victorious, defeating Adedeji Toluwalope, also from SAAT, in straight sets. The third-place honors were shared by Dare Michael from the School of Physical Sciences and Toye Toheeb of SAAT.
In the women's category, Okunuwa Opeyemi from the School of Life Sciences clinched first place, overcoming Akinjoye Favor from SAAT. Third place was shared by Siyanbola Taiwo and Adewole Duyilemi, both from SAAT.

During the medal and certificate presentation, Professor Oladiji praised the Sports Director, Dr. Michael Ajibua, and highlighted the event's success and the impressive performances. She emphasized the importance of balancing sports and academics and noted that sports promote unity. The Vice Chancellor expressed gratitude to everyone for their participation and support.
Mrs. Olatunde Bukola, President of the FUTA Badminton Club and Coach, thanked the Vice Chancellor for her support in making the tournament successful. She encouraged students to engage in sports for physical exercise and skill development.
