Prospective students who wish to join ESUT through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Examination Board (JAMB) must meet the following criteria such as Applicants must have successfully completed a full course of training in a secondary school or an approved institution of equivalent status.  As of the first day of October in the year of their candidature, applicants should be sixteen years of age or older. Candidates must attain the appropriate standard in the examination for entry to their chosen degree program.

Applicants should possess one or more of the following qualifications, Senior School Certificate (SSCE), National Examination Council (NECO), or General Certificate of Education (GCE) O'Level with passes at the credit level in at least five subjects. These should include English Language and Mathematics, and the qualifications should be obtained in not more than two sittings. This requirement applies to all fields of study except for candidates applying for medicine.

For candidates applying for medicine, they must have five credits at a sitting, which should include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Health Science. The Teacher's Grade II Certificate with merit/credit level in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, obtained in not more than two sittings. Qualifications approved by the Senate of the University as equivalent to the above requirements.

Candidates should possess at least two passes at the principal or advanced level, along with five credit passes at the SSCE/NECO/GCE O'Level, obtained in not more than two sittings. These credit passes should include English Language and Mathematics. Passes in two major subjects in the National Certificate in Education (NCE), combined with O'Level credits or their equivalents in three other subjects. This is mainly for students interested in education courses, and education is accepted as a third A-level subject. ESUT's Senate may accept other qualifications that are deemed equivalent to those mentioned in (a) and (b) above.
