Godfrey Okoye University (GOU), located in Enugu, has achieved a significant milestone by securing a grant worth N90 million. The funding is part of a collaborative project that brings together four universities from across the globe, aimed at developing a sustainable entrepreneurship curriculum rooted in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The grant is part of a 4-year project (2024-2027) with a total budget of €80,000,000, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). It involves Godfrey Okoye University (Nigeria), Leuphana University (Germany), Mount Kenya University (Kenya), and the University of Venda (South Africa). The project focuses on integrating sustainable entrepreneurship into educational programs to foster a new generation of business leaders who are conscious of social and environmental impacts.

Mr. Christopher Chidiebere Uwakwe, a faculty member at GOU, joined the project’s kick-off workshop at Leuphana University on April 22, 2024. The workshop's primary objective was to discuss the coordination and implementation of the "Student Training for Entrepreneurial Promotion Sustainability" (STEP-S) project among the partner universities in the Global South. The STEP-S initiative seeks to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to pursue entrepreneurial careers with a sustainable focus.

STEP Program Overview

The STEP program is a 12-week training module that guides participants through the process of starting and running a new business, utilizing action-oriented principles derived from entrepreneurship management and psychology. The expanded STEP-S project aims to enhance this training with a specific focus on sustainability and the SDGs.

Implementation and Future Plans

Under the grant's framework, Godfrey Okoye University will focus on training teachers and developing the STEP-S curriculum for implementation at the secondary school level in Nigeria. Mount Kenya University will concentrate on training undergraduate students, while the University of Venda will focus on postgraduate education. Leuphana University, Germany, will oversee the overall coordination, grant management, and research components among partner institutions.

The goal is to develop a comprehensive sustainable entrepreneurship curriculum at all educational levels, contributing to the attainment of the UN's SDGs by 2030.
