As the valedictory events for Prof. Charles Okechukwu Esimone culminated with his handover to Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, the academic community celebrated a leader who transformed the institution named after the Great Zik of Africa. Prof. Esimone, who served as the sixth substantive Vice Chancellor from June 4, 2019, led UNIZIK to new heights through strategic reforms and a clear vision for academic excellence.

A Journey of Excellence and Innovation

Prof. Esimone, a Fellow of the Nigeria Academy of Science, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Academy of Pharmacy, began his tenure with a bold vision encapsulated in his administrative blueprint, Project 200. This plan focused on academic excellence, community service, administrative reforms, discipline, and advancements, aiming to propel UNIZIK from its 4047th position in the World Universities Webometric rankings to the top 200.

Despite facing significant challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and a prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU), Esimone remained committed to his goals. Under his leadership, UNIZIK improved its rankings, moving up to 1,501+ in the world and 8th in Nigeria in the Times Higher Education World Rankings.

Academic and Administrative Milestones

Esimone's tenure saw notable academic achievements, including the inclusion of UNIZIK lecturers in the Stanford University ranking of the top 2% of world scientists and significant contributions to research and academic culture. His administration promoted 484 staff to Professors and Readers and introduced reforms to improve administrative efficiency.

He also launched new projects, completed existing ones, and attracted substantial endowment funds, estimated between $173 to $200 million, further enhancing the university's infrastructure and resources.
