Human Trafficking Survivor Receives Scholarship from NGO

A non-governmental organization, has extended a scholarship offer to Miss Divine Asuzu, a victim of human trafficking who was recently rescued from Ghana. The Ugwumba Leadership Center has granted her a full scholarship to study at any of Nigeria’s government universities. Additionally, she will receive a monthly upkeep allowance until her admission.

The Ugwumba Leadership Center, a non-governmental organization, has extended a scholarship offer to Miss Divine Asuzu, a victim of human trafficking who was recently rescued from Ghana.

Miss Asuzu was among 10 teenage girls, aged 15 to 16, who were rescued by Nigerian and Ghanaian authorities from sex traffickers in Ghana.

According to reports, the minors were trafficked to Ghana by a syndicate for commercial sex work. The girls were deceived with promises of a better life but were instead subjected to physical abuse, threats, and forced into prostitution. 

The President of the Ugwumba Leadership Center for Africa, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu, revealed the scholarship offer during a press conference in Abuja on Saturday. In his statement, he commended Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State for promptly facilitating the rescue of the trafficked girls and acknowledged the efforts of those in the diaspora whose alert led to their liberation.

In his words, “With respect to the teenage girls repatriated from Ghana, Let me sincerely commend the Governor of Imo State His Excellency Senator Hope Uzodimma for swiftly seeing to the rescue of the underage trafficked girls back home, and at the same time appreciate those in Diaspora who identified and raised alarm that led to their rescue.

Specifically addressing Miss Divine Asuzu, he stated, " “On our side, the Ugwumba Leadership Center after discussing with the parents of Miss Divine Asuzu; one of the rescued girls who hails from Amaokpara community in Nkwerre LGA, Imo State, who indicated her interest to continue with her education.“As an organisation that promotes youth development in Africa, we hereby award her a full scholarship to study in any of the Government Universities in Nigeria.

Nwosu emphasized the importance of showing compassion towards the rescued girls who may have endured emotional and psychological trauma. He urged society to embrace them with love and support to help them recover their dignity.
