ICAN Seeks Stronger Partnership with NOUN, Urges Accreditation for Accounting Program

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) is making moves to strengthen its relationship with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). This was disclosed by the Chairman of the ICAN Kaduna District Society, Mrs. Mary Amuyedo Mary Temitope, during a courtesy visit to the NOUN Kaduna Study Centre and the Centre for Human Resource Development (CHRD).

Leading a delegation, Mrs. Temitope, who also serves as Deputy Bursar at NOUN, emphasized the need to reinforce collaboration between the university and ICAN, commending NOUN’s role in training accounting students at degree level. However, she highlighted that NOUN's accounting program is yet to secure ICAN accreditation, a crucial step for ensuring its graduates receive exemptions when applying for ICAN exams.

The ICAN Chairman urged NOUN to pursue accreditation with urgency, warning that a lack of certification could place the university’s accounting students at a disadvantage post-graduation. She also encouraged NOUN to promote the Accounting Technician Scheme (ATS) among its 100-level students, offering a fast-track route to becoming Chartered Accountants before completing their degrees.

Mrs. Fatima Yakubu, Principal Assistant Registrar of the Kaduna Study Centre, received the delegation on behalf of the Director, expressing appreciation for ICAN’s support and insights. She assured the delegation that all matters discussed would be conveyed to the relevant authorities for consideration.
