ICD President commissions ABU Academy of Dental Implantology

The Nigerian Academy of Dental Implantology (NADI) has been officially commissioned at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, marking a new milestone in dental education and practice in Nigeria.

The academy, located within the Faculty of Dentistry at ABU Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), was inaugurated on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, by the President of the International College of Dentists (ICD), Dr. Ian Doyle. It was sponsored by the International Postgraduate Medical College (IPMC), Jamaica.

Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, the centre boasts three implant machines, four implantology training repositories, advanced MSD I surgical kits, 30 dental implant abutments, 25 dental implants, and two contra-angle handpieces, among other tools.

Speaking during the commissioning, Dr. Doyle highlighted the global importance of implantology, commending ABU and IPMC for establishing the centre. He expressed delight with the facilities and thanked the university for the honor of commissioning them.

President of IPMC, Prof. Christopher Ogunsalu—an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who played a pivotal role in establishing the academy—underscored his vision of ensuring the dental school becomes self-sustaining in the long run. He personally donated three implantology training repositories and advanced implant kits valued at over $18,000.

Prof. Ogunsalu expressed appreciation to ABU management for their support, describing the pioneering dental students as “risk takers” and wishing them success in their academic journey.

In his remarks, ABU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, described the development as “amazing” and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to continually upgrade the centre. He thanked both Dr. Doyle and Prof. Ogunsalu for their contributions.

Also speaking at the event, Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, Prof. M. S. Shehu, and Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Prof. Sunday Olusegun Ajike, expressed gratitude for the support received from IPMC and ICD. They extended special appreciation to Dr. Doyle and his wife, Mrs. Anne Doyle, for travelling from the United States to grace the occasion.

Following the commissioning, the guests paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Zazzau, His Highness Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, CFR, at his palace. Later that evening, the Department of Theatre and Performing Arts hosted them at ABU Drama Village, where students delivered three captivating performances blending entertainment, education, and Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity.

It was a memorable day, celebrating not only the advancement of dental training in Nigeria but also the cultural vibrancy of the ABU community.
