The management and staff of Igbinedion University came together on Thursday to celebrate a momentous occasion: the 90th birthday of the university’s revered Chancellor, Sir Chief Dr. Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion. The special 18th Senate session was held at his residence, marking not only a significant milestone in his life but also recognising his outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s education sector.

Under the guidance of Vice-Chancellor Professor Lawrence Ezemonye, PhD, FAS, the university community expressed profound gratitude for the Chancellor’s remarkable achievements as a benefactor and educationist. In a heartfelt tribute, Professor Ezemonye described Sir Chief Dr. Igbinedion as “a gift to the world,” offering prayers for his continued good health and divine guidance.

During the session, the Vice-Chancellor provided a comprehensive overview of the university’s progress, highlighting notable advancements within the hospital under the Chancellor’s leadership. Participants took turns to express their deep admiration for Sir Chief Dr. Igbinedion, referring to him as a “cherished father” and a “true legend.”

Professor Godwin Luke Umoru, a distinguished Professor of Law at the Oba Erediauwa College of Law, Igbinedion University, extolled the Chancellor as a detribalised Nigerian and a man of many firsts, emphasising his extensive influence on various sectors of the country’s economy.

In a touching moment, the Esama of Benin, Sir Chief Dr. Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the recognition bestowed upon him. The Vice-Chancellor, along with representatives from various departments, presented the Chancellor with thoughtful birthday gifts, symbolising their gratitude for his invaluable contributions to the university and the nation.

The special Senate session concluded on a high note, leaving an indelible mark as a celebration of a visionary leader who has significantly shaped the landscape of education in Nigeria.
