The Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has emphasized the importance of synergy between governance, security, and citizens’ responsibilities as the foundation for a secure and prosperous society. He made this assertion while delivering the 2024 Convocation Lecture at the University of Ibadan.

The lecture, titled "Unlocking Progress: The Indispensable Trio of Security, Governance, and Citizens' Responsibilities," underscored how the interconnectedness of these elements is vital for national stability, democratic progress, and development.

Dr. Egbetokun noted that effective governance strengthens security by addressing root causes of conflict, ensuring resources for law enforcement, and maintaining accountability. Similarly, active citizen participation through voting, law-abidance, and community service reinforces societal norms, creating a conducive environment for peace and policy implementation.

“Neglecting security, governance, or citizens' responsibilities leads to instability and regression,” he stated, calling for balanced efforts to maintain the trio as a prerequisite for national progress.

The IGP highlighted community policing as a successful model for enhancing public safety through trust and collaboration between law enforcement and communities. He advocated patriotism as a driver for citizens to partner with security agencies in tackling terrorism, insurgencies, and other threats to national peace.

Dr. Egbetokun recommended strengthening institutions, promoting inclusive governance, and fostering civic responsibilities as critical steps toward unlocking Nigeria’s full potential.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, lauded the IGP’s dedication and transformative leadership. He noted that the lecture served as a clarion call for all stakeholders to actively contribute to building a sustainable and prosperous society.

“Security is the bedrock upon which societal progress and development are built,” Professor Adebowale remarked, reiterating the need for collective action in realizing the nation’s goals.

The 2024 Convocation Lecture invited policymakers, academics, and citizens to reimagine their roles in achieving long-term national stability and prosperity.
