Innovation and Research Commercialization Take Center Stage at FULOKOJA 4th Makoju Memorial Lecture

The Federal University Lokoja brought together academia, industry leaders, and policymakers at the 4th Engr Joseph Oyeyani Makoju Memorial Lecture, where the Vice Chancellor, Prof Gbenga Solomon Ibileye, led a strong call for innovation driven growth and practical research impact.

The event, held on April 23, 2026, took place at the 250-seat capacity Joseph and Enesi Makoju Memorial Lecture Theatre, Felele Campus.

In his address, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Gbenga Solomon Ibileye, stressed that universities must go beyond theoretical teaching and embrace solutions that directly impact society. 

He said institutions must take deliberate steps to align research with industry needs and national priorities. He described the lecture as a critical platform for advancing ideas that can transform Nigeria’s economy and strengthen its industrial base.

Delivering the lecture on the theme of commercialization of research and development products, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NASENI, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, who was represented by Engr Dr Abdullahi Agava, emphasized that Nigeria must convert research into tangible economic value. He noted that innovation remains incomplete until it reaches the market and improves lives. 

He identified weak funding structures, limited industry collaboration, and institutional bottlenecks as key challenges slowing progress.

Halilu urged universities to reform their systems by rewarding innovation outcomes such as prototypes and startups alongside academic publications. He also called for stronger partnerships between academia and industry to bridge the gap between knowledge and production.

In his goodwill message, the Chief General Manager Operations of Dangote Cement Plant Obajana, Mr Gwong John Maren, described the late Engr Joseph Makoju as an exceptional engineer whose legacy shaped the growth of Nigeria’s cement industry. 

He stated that the expansion of Dangote Cement across several African countries benefited greatly from Makoju’s technical expertise and leadership. He added that his commitment to human capital development helped produce indigenous professionals who now lead major industrial operations.

Also, the Commissioner for Education in Kogi State, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Alabi Albert, commended the Makoju family for sustaining a legacy that continues to promote educational development. He noted that the values of discipline and excellence associated with the late engineer remain vital for national progress.

Meanwhile, Dr Daniel Adejo, representing Dr James Onoja, encouraged students to embrace engineering as a pathway to nation building. He urged them to focus on innovation and problem solving rather than job seeking, noting that the ideals of Engr Makoju continue to inspire transformation.

In the same vein, the Chief Security Adviser to the Kogi State Governor, retired Commodore Jerry Omodara, praised the initiative and expressed confidence that the lecture would stimulate ideas capable of driving societal advancement. He reaffirmed support for partnerships that strengthen education and innovation.

Responding on behalf of the family, Dr. Gladys Makoju expressed sincere appreciation to the university and all stakeholders for sustaining the legacy of her late husband.
