IUMSA Hosts Successful Medical Outreach in Okada; Honours Brig. Gen. Aburime

The Igbinedion University Medical Students’ Association (IUMSA) recently carried out the IUMSA-Brigadier-General P. Olubunmi Aburime Medical Outreach at the Okada Town Hall, delivering essential free healthcare services to members of the local community.

The one-day program, held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., was organised in honour of Brigadier-General Paulina Olubunmi Aburime, a distinguished senior officer of the Nigerian Army Medical Corps, in recognition of her longstanding commitment to community development, health advocacy, and support for medical education initiatives.

A total of 103 residents of Okada and surrounding communities in Ovia North-East Local Government Area benefited from the outreach. Participants received comprehensive medical check-ups, vital signs screening (including blood pressure, blood glucose, and body mass index measurements), basic clinical examinations, and individualised health counselling on preventive care, nutrition, and common health conditions.

The outreach was delivered through well-coordinated service stations to ensure efficiency, patient flow, and high-quality care. Twenty-nine dedicated IUMSA members—medical students of Igbinedion University Okada—actively participated, working in teams under faculty supervision. The students displayed remarkable professionalism, compassion, and teamwork while attending to community members, demonstrating the practical application of their training and the association’s ethos of service to society.

This initiative forms part of IUMSA’s annual calendar of community health programmes, which aim to bridge academic learning with tangible public health impact in the university’s host community and beyond. Previous efforts by the association and Igbinedion University Teaching Hospital have included similar free screening exercises, health education symposia, and awareness campaigns targeting prevalent local health challenges.

Residents who attended expressed gratitude for the accessible, no-cost services, noting that such interventions help address basic healthcare needs in underserved areas. IUMSA leadership has indicated that outreach programmes of this nature will remain a regular feature of the association’s activities, reinforcing the vital role of tomorrow’s doctors in promoting health equity and preventive medicine.

The IUMSA-Brigadier-General P. Olubunmi Aburime Medical Outreach 2026 was hailed as a resounding success and a worthy tribute to an exemplary leader whose support continues to inspire student-led health interventions across the region.
