Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Wins 2024 Enactus Contest

Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University (formerly the University of Agriculture, Makurdi) has clinched the title at the Enactus Nigeria 2024 National Competition with its innovative project, ECORESIN. Competing against 32 universities, the JOSTUM team emerged victorious, defeating notable contenders like Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) and Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA). ABU finished in second place.

This victory positions JS Tarka University to represent Nigeria at the Enactus World Cup 2024, scheduled to take place in Astana, Kazakhstan from October 2-4, 2024. The competition, held at the Civic Centre in Lagos, marked a triumphant return to an in-person format after a hiatus since 2019.

The ECORESIN project aims to combat the pressing issue of plastic waste by developing biodegradable polymers sourced from agricultural and plant-based materials, including cassava and water hyacinth. These sustainable materials are designed to create everyday items such as shopping bags, seedling wrappers, and packaging for food and pharmaceuticals. Importantly, the polymers decompose without leaving harmful residues and can even transform into fertilizers, thus supporting sustainable agricultural practices.

Following the national competition, JS Tarka University received the green light to prepare for the World Cup, thanks to a successful audit conducted by the Enactus HQ Country Director during his visit to the university from August 8-12, 2024.
