Kaduna State University Marks World GIS Day 2024 with Summit
Dr. Asmau Ahmad Mukhtar, the first female Head of the Department of Geography, welcomed attendees and advocated for a shift in perspective toward GIS applications for national development.
Kaduna State University (KASU) commemorated the 25th World GIS Day on November 20, 2024, with a one-day summit organized by the Department of Geography and Sustainability Studies. The event, themed "Mapping Minds, Shaping the Future," focused on the transformative potential of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in addressing socio-economic and environmental challenges.
Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Prof. Muhammad Bashir Ali, emphasized the summit’s significance and encouraged participants to engage in impactful discussions. He reaffirmed KASU’s commitment to using GIS tools to solve critical issues.

Dr. Aliyu Ja’afar, Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Sustainability Studies, praised KASU’s expanding focus on sustainability studies, stressing GIS’s role in combating environmental degradation, food insecurity, and national security threats.
The summit featured a panel discussion on global best practices in environmental sustainability, climate change mitigation, and energy transition, with contributions from experts like Prof. Yahya Saleh, Prof. Auwal Farouk Abdussalam, and Dr. Bonet. R. Atiyong.
A live demonstration of drone technology for GIS data collection and analysis was also presented.
