The Kano State Government has announced the employment of 5,000 new teachers as part of a significant effort to revitalize the education sector. Governor Abba Yusuf made this announcement on Saturday while declaring a state of emergency in education, underscoring the need for qualified personnel to manage public schools effectively.

Governor Yusuf emphasized that this initiative aims to provide the necessary manpower to ensure that public schools in Kano State have adequate and qualified teachers, thereby improving the quality of education. He assured that the days of pupils receiving lessons under harsh conditions, such as sitting on bare floors, are over. The government plans to undertake the total rehabilitation of public schools, including the provision of furniture.

Governor Yusuf painted a grim picture of the current state of education, revealing that over 4.7 million pupils are forced to sit on bare floors, and 400 schools have only one teacher for all classes and subjects. He criticized the previous administration for closing down schools, allowing them to be vandalized, and converting them into commercial premises. Teachers, he noted, have been struggling with outdated resources and a lack of basic amenities like clean water and sanitation.

He accused the past administration of prioritizing profit over education, leading to a legacy of neglect and disrepair. In response, Yusuf vowed to confront these multifaceted problems head-on, including the severe shortage of qualified teachers, inadequate training programs, and the socio-economic challenges faced by students.
