Kano Governor Allocates 13% to Education in N549bn 2025 Budget Expenditure

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has presented a historic N549.16 billion budget for 2025, with a focus on education, health, and infrastructure. The budget allocates 31% (N168.35bn) to education, marking a significant boost for the sector.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has presented the Kano State 2025 budget, with a historic N549.16 billion earmarked for key sectors, including a significant allocation for education. The budget, which is termed the "Budget of Hope, Human Capital, and Economic Development," prioritizes human capital development, infrastructure, and healthcare.

The budget allocates 57% of the total expenditure—N312.63 billion—to capital projects, while the remaining 43%, or N236.53 billion, is dedicated to recurrent expenses. Education, with N168.35 billion, stands out as the largest beneficiary, receiving 31% of the entire budget. This marks a significant boost to the education sector, reflecting the administration's focus on improving access to quality education. Health follows closely with 16.5% of the budget, amounting to N90.6 billion, while infrastructure development is allocated N70.68 billion, or 12.87% of the total budget.

In his address, Governor Yusuf emphasized that the primary focus for 2025 would be on expanding human capital and improving infrastructure. He stressed that despite the state's limited resources, his administration is committed to ensuring that education receives the necessary funding. Part of the plan includes the revival of the Kano Education Development Support (KEDS) agency to enhance educational funding. The governor expressed confidence that the Kano State House of Assembly would support the initiative through necessary legislative actions.

Additionally, the governor outlined key legislative reforms, including bills for social protection, education trust, security, and civil service. These reforms are aimed at ensuring good governance and long-term economic growth. Governor Yusuf reiterated the commitment to reducing poverty, creating employment opportunities, and boosting agriculture in the state.

Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibril Falgore, assured the governor of the assembly's full support for the prompt review and passage of the budget. He emphasized the importance of swift approval to ensure timely implementation and the effective delivery of benefits to the people.

The Kano State Assembly is expected to begin deliberations on the 2025 budget in the coming weeks, with an anticipation for quick passage to facilitate the implementation of the proposed developmental plans.
