KWASU Hosts 1st Memorial Lecture Honoring Professor Mary Ebun Modupe Kolawole

On Wednesday, July 31, 2024, the Kwara State University (KWASU) International Conference Centre hosted the 1st Memorial Lecture in honor of the late Professor Mary Ebun Modupe Kolawole. The event, organized by the Kwara branch of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), celebrated the contributions of Professor Kolawole, a renowned literary scholar and theorist who pioneered the Africanist feminist theory known as womanism.

The lecture featured Professor Dunmade Ibukun Mosadioluwa from the University of Ilorin as the guest speaker. His address, titled "Creative Writing, Criticism and the Making of Literary Classics," emphasized the importance of literary expression and its role in shaping culture.

In attendance were notable figures, including the KWASU Vice Chancellor, represented by Dr. Gafar Olorisade, Director of the Centre for Wellness and Creative Arts Therapy. The family of the late Professor Kolawole was also present, including her husband, Professor 'Deboye Kolawole, and son, Mr. Temi Kolawole. The event was further graced by the President of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Dr. Usman Oladipo Akanbi, and Professor Dipo Babalola, Head of the Department of English at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife.

Professor Mary Kolawole, who once served as the Head of the Department of English and was the pioneer Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies at KWASU, was celebrated for her significant impact on literature and academia. The memorial lecture provided an opportunity for attendees to reflect on her legacy and contributions to literary scholarship.
