Lagos Teacher Adeola Adefemi Wins 2023 Maltina Teacher of the Year Award
Outshining 1,498 other teachers who submitted entries for the MToY award nationwide, Adefemi's contributions to the field of education and her remarkable dedication to her students set her apart.
Adeola Adefemi, an English language teacher at Keke Senior High School in Agege, Lagos, was announced as the recipient of the 2023 Maltina Teacher of the Year (MToY) Award during a grand-finale ceremony held in Lekki, Lagos. Adefemi's achievement comes just two weeks after she was recognized as Africa's best teacher by the African Union.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Lagos State Governor Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, as well as the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu.

Adefemi's remarkable feat makes her the first teacher from Lagos State to win the Maltina Teacher of the Year Award in the nine-year history of the competition. Notably, she received the Best Teacher Prize in Lagos State the previous year, celebrated and rewarded by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu with an SUV. The second and third prize positions were secured by Mr. Azuh Chike Emmanuel of Ezemu Girls Grammar School in Delta State and Adam Abdulqadir Nda of Model Science College in Niger State, respectively.
As the winner, Adeola Adefemi is entitled to a total cash prize of N6.5 million, which includes an immediate award of N1.5 million and an additional N1 million each year for the next five years if she remains in her teaching position. She will also receive a gold trophy and have the opportunity to pursue all expenses-paid short course studies abroad. Furthermore, her school, Keke Senior High School, will benefit from the construction of a block of classrooms or a laboratory worth N20 million.

The Maltina Teacher of the Year Award is an annual competition organized and sponsored by Nigerian Breweries Plc through its social corporate arm, NB-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund. The competition is open to teachers from both public and private secondary schools across Nigeria, and it aims to identify, celebrate, and reward exceptional educators in the country.
The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in his address, lauded Nigerian Breweries for initiating and supporting the competition, emphasizing that it has delivered significant results not only for the teaching profession but also for the education sector and the nation's economy.
Dr. Yusuf Sununu, the Minister of State for Education, commended Nigerian Breweries for this valuable investment and its contributions to Nigeria's education sector. He noted that the Maltina Teacher of the Year Award fosters healthy competition among teachers nationwide and helps to address the brain drain problem in the teaching profession.
