The European Union (EU) has pledged €5.4 million to enhance teacher training in Northwest Nigeria as part of its commitment to address the issue of out-of-school children.EU Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, made this announcement during the official launch of a €40 million education and youth empowerment program in Northwestern Nigeria through the Global Gateway initiative.

The €5.4 million allocation is specifically dedicated to strengthening the skills and capacity of teachers in challenging environments. This investment underscores the EU's recognition of the crucial role teachers play in delivering quality education.

Jutta Urpilainen emphasized that the EU's program aims not only to support teachers but also to empower youth by providing vocational education and launching campaigns to challenge social norms, particularly those harmful to girls.

The EU's comprehensive program was developed in collaboration with Nigerian authorities to meet local needs and ensure ownership of the initiatives. It seeks to bring young people to the forefront by establishing the Youth Sounding Board in Nigeria and other countries. This initiative aims to involve and empower youth in decision-making processes.

Various components of the program, such as social protection, income generation, vocational education, and support for adolescent girls, are designed to promote gender equality and community-based capacity building.

The Governor of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi, speaking on behalf of the Northwestern states, expressed gratitude to the EU for their support in addressing the issue of out-of-school children. The governors in the region have made education a top priority and have collectively committed to significant investments in the sector over the next four years.

The Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, emphasized that neglecting education could have serious consequences for the country's welfare and security. He called on state governors to prioritize education and youth empowerment, aligning with the EU's objectives for revitalizing the sector.
