The management of Lagos State University (LASU) has recently issued a directive to both staff and students, prohibiting the use of offices and classrooms as overnight accommodations.

This decision came after discussions at the university Senate's 311th Statutory Meeting on June 27, 2024, addressing concerns raised in a security report with reference number LASU/SEN/ST.311/024/AOB.

The directive, issued after deliberations during the university Senate’s 311th Statutory Meeting on June 27, 2024, addresses concerns raised in a security report (Ref No: LASU/SEN/ST.311/024/AOB). The report documented instances of staff and students resorting to offices and classrooms for overnight stays, often with improvised arrangements and even kitchen utensils. The management has deemed this behavior unacceptable, citing significant security and health risks associated with such practices.

“The behavior of using offices and classrooms for overnight purposes is unacceptable,” stated the university management. “It jeopardizes security protocols and poses health risks.”

Furthermore, it was revealed that members of the LASU Student Union Executive Committee had transformed their offices at the Students Union Arcade into living quarters, occasionally hosting overnight guests of the opposite sex. When questioned by security officers, these members asserted their autonomy over the Arcade, justifying their actions based on its student-controlled status.
