LASU College of Medicine Records Mass Turnout in First On-Campus Congregational Election

Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) made history today as it successfully hosted its first-ever Congregational Election Exercise on campus. This landmark event signifies a new chapter in the institution’s democratic engagement, allowing faculty and staff to actively participate in shaping the governance of Lagos State University (LASU) without the hindrance of distance.

For the first time, LASUCOM joined its counterparts at the Ojo and Epe campuses in hosting a polling centre for the 2025 Congregation Representatives Election. This progressive step was approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello (mni, NPOM), as part of her ongoing commitment to fostering inclusivity and seamless participation in the electoral process.

Addressing faculty and staff before the commencement of proceedings, the Provost of LASUCOM, Prof. Olufemi Idowu, underscored the significance of this occasion. He highlighted how previous challenges related to distance had limited the college’s participation in the democratic process. With the establishment of a polling centre on campus, members of LASUCOM now have a direct opportunity to influence university leadership and ensure their voices contribute to decision-making at the highest levels.

Prof. Idowu commended Prof. Olatunji-Bello for her unwavering dedication to transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, which made this milestone possible. He encouraged faculty and staff to engage actively in the process, stressing that their votes would play a crucial role in shaping the university’s future and strengthening a culture of collaboration and mutual respect.

“This election is not just about choosing individuals; it is about setting a course for our future,” Prof. Idowu remarked. “It is about selecting leaders who will embody our shared values and work toward our collective goals.”

The election was met with an overwhelming voter turnout, with faculty and staff participating enthusiastically. Many praised the decision to establish a polling centre at LASUCOM, noting that it made the voting process more accessible and convenient. The exercise was conducted smoothly and in strict adherence to the Electoral Guidelines set by the Electoral Committee.

“I was overjoyed when I heard we wouldn’t have to make a tedious trip to exercise our electoral franchise, and I hope this highly commendable development is maintained,” said Mr. Aluko, a non-teaching staff member, in a statement to the Information Unit after casting his vote.

As LASUCOM embraces this progressive improvement, the successful election stands as a testament to the college’s commitment to strengthening institutional democracy and contributing meaningfully to the progress of LASU.
