The Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences, Lagos State University (LASU), is set to host its first Departmental Workshop Series on Wednesday, 2nd October 2024. The workshop, themed “Oil Sector and The Nigerian Economic Crisis: Where Do We Stand?”, promises to offer deep insights into the ongoing economic challenges facing Nigeria's oil sector and its wider implications for the nation's economy.

The event will be held at the Africa Centre of Excellence for Innovative and Transformative STEM Education (ACEITSE), located at LASU’s main campus in Ojo, Lagos, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. It will bring together renowned scholars, industry experts, and thought leaders to discuss and analyze critical issues within the oil sector, a key driver of Nigeria's economy.

  • Prof. Olanrewaju Olaniyan, Vice Chancellor, Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo, Oyo State.
  • Prof. Kayode Soremekun, Department of Political Science, FSS, LASU and former Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
  • Dr. Olusoga Sofolahan, Upstream Risk and Control Advisor, ExxonMobil.

The Co-Host for the workshop is Prof. Jameelah Yaqub, Head, Department of Economics, FSS, LASU, while the Host is Prof. Femi Lawal, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, LASU. The Chief Host of the event will be Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University.

This highly anticipated workshop will provide an in-depth look at the oil sector’s current role in Nigeria’s economy, especially in light of recent challenges, such as fluctuating oil prices, the push for diversification, and the global energy transition. The workshop is expected to foster discussions on the way forward for the Nigerian economy amid these pressing issues.
