Lagos State University Directorate of Staff Welfare, Training and Development (DSWT&D) holds A 2-Day advanced training program for members of staff on confidencial secretarial cadre.

The Lagos State University Directorate of Staff Welfare, Training and Development (DSWT&D) on Thursday, 17th August 2023 commenced a 2-Day in-house training for the members of staff on Confidential Secretarial Cadre.

The opening ceremony of the 2-Day in-house training for advanced secretarial cadre in the University with the theme "Enhancing Administrative Efficiency and Professional Development for Secretaries", was held at the Senate Chamber, 1st Floor, Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, Main Campus, Ojo Lagos.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Adenike Omotunde Boyo in her keynote address expressed her appreciation to the organizers of the training programme and welcomed the participants to the formal opening ceremony of the 2-Day Advanced Training organized for staff of the University in the Secretarial Cadre.

Prof. Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, averred that the foremost objective of the training was to sharpen the knowledge, skills and performances of the staff in the Secretarial Cadre and also to enhance their service delivery. She said "...the training is also an opportunity for the University Management to demonstrate that we value you all and appreciate the critical role you all play in support of the vision of becoming the Best University in West Africa." VC added.

The Professor of Physiology advised the participants to concentrate and take advantage of the training session, in order to get themselves adequately prepared for their promotional examination which is coming up very soon.

The University Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel A. FANU also welcomed the participants and gave reasons for the 2-Day advanced training for the confidential secretarial cadre. He gave a brief history of how the training programme was approved for staff members on the confidential secretarial cadre.

He concluded by giving accolades to the Confidential Secretaries who have been playing key role in the University.

The first Resource Person and Deputy Registrar, Directorate of General Administration, Archival and Legal Affairs, Mrs. Olajumoke Boyejo, spoke on "Legal Implications of the Role of the Secretaries in the University". She lectured the participants on the ethics of their roles and legal implications.

The second Resource Person and Principal Assistant Registrar, DSWT&D, Mrs. Aisha Olukoya-Shuara, talked on the topic "Developing Emotional Intelligence and Communication Skills for Effective Productivity". She discussed Emotional Intelligence, its types and impact on job performances, Communication Skills, its importance and benefits of developing both skills, adding that, nurturing emotional intelligence and honing communication skills are essential for boosting productivity and fostering harmonious work environment.

The last Resource Person and Chief Personal Secretary, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Office, Mrs. A. O. Oyenuga presented a paper on "Exposition to the Complexities of Secretarial Services in the University". She made it known that the secretarial services in the Universities are essential for the smooth running of the institution as the officers provide administrative support to faculty members, staff and students.

She also stated some of the responsibilities of secretarial staff to include; Using a word processing package such as Microsoft 365 and Word; Writing letters; Dealing with telephone and email enquiries, using an email system; Photocopying and printing various documents; Organizing and storing paperwork, documents, and computer-based information; Creating and maintaining filing and other office systems; Keeping diaries and arranging appointments amongst others.

Other members of the University Management in attendance at the opening session were Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Olufunsho Omobitan; University Bursar represented by the Deputy Bursar, Financial Reporting and Fixed Asset Management, Mr. Taiwo Omoyin and University Librarian represented by the Principal Librarian, Mr. Tajudeen Okusaga.

Top members of staff in attendance were, Deputy Registrar, Vice Chancellor's Office, Dr. Lateef Shekoni and Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Lateef Salami. 

Members of staff of the University Multimedia Centre, Centre for Information and Public Relations and DSWT&D were also in attendance.

The 2-Day in-house training for advanced secretarial cadre is expected to come to a close on Friday, 18th August 2023.
