LASU VC Commissions Handball Spectators’ Gallery Donated by LASUED VC Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye

Lagos State University (LASU) Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, on Thursday, June 18, 2026, commissioned a newly constructed Handball Court Spectators’ Gallery at the Sports Complex, LASU Main Campus, Ojo.

The facility was donated by the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, a former Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs at LASU and distinguished alumna.

Director, LASU Directorate of Advancement (LASUDA), Distinguished Professor Rafiu Okuneye, said the project was facilitated by the Directorate to strengthen stakeholder engagement and institutional development. He described it as a significant contribution to sporting excellence and institutional growth, noting the gallery would improve spectator comfort and boost sports development.

Prof. Okuneye commended Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye for her generosity and appealed for proper maintenance to preserve the facility for future generations.

Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye described the occasion as deeply emotional, calling handball her “first love”. She expressed hope the gallery would encourage greater participation in sports, improve spectators’ experience, and nurture talents that would bring honour to LASU.

Reflecting on her journey, she said: “LASU is not just an institution to me; it is my academic birthplace, my professional foundation, and my intellectual home.” She described the gallery as a modest token of appreciation and stressed that building great institutions requires alumni, stakeholders and benefactors to embrace the culture of giving back.

Prof. Olatunji-Bello appreciated the donation, stating the facility represents legacy, service, institutional pride and commitment to youth and sports development. The Professor of Physiology praised Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye’s longstanding contributions and acknowledged LASUDA for facilitating the project.

The VC officially commissioned the gallery and led management of LASU and LASUED, plus guests, on a tour. The event concluded with an exhibition handball match between LASU and LASUED teams, showcasing healthy rivalry and collaboration.
