In a significant recognition of her maternal and transformative leadership style, the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, has been honoured by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) as one of the "45 Distinguished Nigerians."

The award was presented on Friday, April 17, 2026, at the Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja, as part of the activities marking the 45th anniversary of the apex student body.

Prof. Olatunji-Bello, widely referred to within the LASU community as the "Senior Abiyamo of Nigeria" (the Great Mother), was cited for her welfarist approach to university administration. NANS President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, lauded her for fostering an environment where research, innovation, and student well-being thrive.

"Her exemplary leadership and transformative contributions to university administration continue to strengthen tertiary education and inspire young Nigerians," Comrade Oladoja stated during the presentation. 

In her acceptance speech, the Professor of Physiology expressed her gratitude to NANS, emphasizing that her primary mission remains the shaping of young lives. She dedicated the award to the over 70,000 students of LASU, describing them as "obedient, diligent, and exemplary."
