LASUED Muslim Community Hosts 2026 Annual Ramadan Lecture on Islam as a Solution to Insecurity

In observance of Ramadan, the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Oto/Ijanikin Muslim Community, in partnership with the Prof. Bashiru Babatunde Oderinde Foundation, held its 2026 annual Ramadan lecture on Thursday, 19th February, 2026, at the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Hall.

In observance of Ramadan, the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Oto/Ijanikin Muslim Community, in partnership with the Prof. Bashiru Babatunde Oderinde Foundation, held its 2026 annual Ramadan lecture on Thursday, 19th February, 2026, at the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Hall.

The lecture, themed “Islam: An Antidote to Insecurity,” focused on how Islamic principles can guide ethical behaviour and societal responsibility to mitigate crime and insecurity.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. M.A. Shittu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), emphasized the spiritual and moral significance of Ramadan, urging the university community to uphold peace, unity, and integrity.

Opening the event, Dr. Ilyas Jinadu, Chairman of the LASUED Muslim Community, welcomed dignitaries and participants, expressing gratitude to Almighty Allah for the opportunity to witness another Ramadan season.

Guest speaker Dr. AbdulHakeem AbdulLateef highlighted the need to pair prayer with deliberate and responsible action. He stressed that criminal acts are human actions, not divine will, and must be addressed through fair, impartial, and effective judicial processes.

On the role of parents, Dr. AbdulLateef referenced the Yoruba proverb, “Ile ni a ti n ko eso rode”, noting that values instilled at home shape societal behaviour. He encouraged parents to model integrity, responsibility, and accountability, observing that children learn more from observed actions than from spoken words.

He further identified key stakeholders responsible for addressing crime, including law enforcement officers, legal practitioners, judicial officials, passive bystanders, and political actors who enable injustice, stressing that collective accountability is essential for societal security.

Speaking on behalf of the foundation, Prof. Khadijat Olaniya affirmed that the lecture series continues to reflect the values and enduring legacy of Prof. Bashiru Babatunde Oderinde, fostering education, leadership, and community development.

The event drew prominent attendees, including Alhaji Muhideen S.A.O, Chief Imam of LASUED, former LASU Chief Imam Amidu Sanni, university staff, students, and members of the Muslim community, reinforcing the lecture’s role as a platform for moral reflection and societal engagement.
