Prof. Adekunle Olowe, Group Leader of the Bacteriology Unit at the Center for Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases, College of Health Sciences, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, has highlighted various factors contributing to the spread of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in Nigeria.

In a statement obtained by journalists in Osogbo, Prof. Olowe emphasized that NTDs disproportionately affect the world's poorest populations, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. He identified limited access to healthcare, lack of awareness and education, and environmental factors such as mosquitoes and black flies as key facilitators of NTD transmission.

Prof. Olowe underscored the public health challenge posed by NTDs, listing diseases such as Lymphatic Filariasis (Elephantiasis), Onchocerciasis (River Blindness), Schistosomiasis (Bilharzia), and Trachoma as common NTDs in Nigeria.

To address the prevalence of NTDs, Prof. Olowe proposed several solutions. He called on all tiers of government to strengthen health systems, implement integrated disease management programs, and enhance community engagement and education. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of improving water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) practices, implementing vector control measures, and investing in research and development.

Furthermore, Prof. Olowe advocated for policy and advocacy initiatives, partnerships, and collaborations to effectively tackle the spread of NTDs in Nigeria.

The identification of these factors by Prof. Olowe serves as a crucial step towards developing comprehensive strategies to combat NTDs and improve public health outcomes in Nigeria.
