A loaded gun was found in a 3 year-old students bag at school on Tuesday at Springfield Public Schools(SPS). The incident, which occurred at Mallory Early Childhood Center, is currently under investigation by both the school and the police.

Melissa Knetzer, the principal of the center, assured staff and families in a statement that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of students and staff. She confirmed that everyone is safe and the situation is being handled appropriately.

The statement revealed that a staff member at Mallory found the handgun in the backpack of a three-year-old student enrolled in a special education summer program. The staff member acted promptly, securing the gun in the office and alerting the school police. It was reported that the young student was unaware of the presence of the handgun in their backpack.

Knetzer stated that an investigation is underway and all appropriate procedures will be followed in response to the incident.

SPS Chief Communication Officer Stephan Hall emphasized the school’s strict policy against weapons, stating, “There is zero tolerance for a weapon of any kind on school property, and in this case, we had a very young child who was unaware of it being in their backpack.”

In response to the incident, SPS has also placed a hotline call to the Children’s Division.
