Lt. Gen. TY Danjuma Addresses Universal University Funding Issue

Lieutenant-General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, former Chief of Army Staff in Nigeria, has voiced his concerns about the universal issue of poor university funding. During his decoration as a UI@75 Ambassador Extraordinaire in Lagos, he noted that inadequate funding of universities is not unique to Nigeria.

He highlighted that even the United States, considered the wealthiest country globally, does not directly fund its universities but provides loans to students instead.Lt. Gen. Danjuma emphasized that public universities need to actively seek additional funding beyond government subventions to thrive.

While he commended the University of Ibadan for its efforts to revitalize the institution, he stressed that achieving their commendable aspirations would require strategic planning over time.

General Danjuma's wife, Daisy, was also recognized during the ceremony. She is set to receive an honorary Doctor of Law degree from the University of Ibadan during its 2023 Convocation ceremonies and 75th Foundation Day on November 17, 2023.

General Danjuma, a 2020 Honorary Doctor of Letters Graduate (D. Litt. 2020) of the University of Ibadan, is the founder of the TY Danjuma Foundation. His foundation previously donated N342 million to upgrade the Akinkugbe Kidney Centre as a Centre of Excellence in Research, Diagnosis, and Treatment of renal complications.

The University of Ibadan, which began in 1948 as a College of the University of London with 103 students in three faculties, has since grown to accommodate over 42,000 students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels across 18 faculties and a School of Business.

The university is globally recognized, with its College of Medicine considered the best in sub-Saharan Africa, and its Postgraduate College is a flagship for postgraduate education in Nigeria.

Furthermore, the University of Ibadan hosts the Pan African University Life and Earth Sciences Institute, attracting over 400 students from 46 African countries.
