In a remarkable testament to resilience and determination, Lyn Thomas, a 52-year-old housemaid in the United States, has realized her dream of attaining a Bachelor's Degree after three decades of selflessly caring for others. Thomas is set to graduate from the Borough of Manhattan Community College in New York, United States, with a Degree in Public Health.

Her journey is one of unwavering commitment, marked by personal hardships and the pursuit of education against all odds. Thomas, who moved to New York at the age of 18, worked as a nanny for several decades. Despite facing adversities, including single parenthood and homelessness, she continued to persevere in her role as a domestic worker.

Thomas encountered significant challenges, such as the father of her child leaving before the birth, and a failed marriage due to her husband's struggles with addiction, resulting in financial loss and homelessness. Undeterred by these difficulties, she maintained a strong resolve to achieve her dream of earning a Degree.

"I worked very hard for this. I didn’t have a high school diploma. Because I’m a go-getter, you can’t tell me no. I will do it," expressed Thomas, reflecting on her tenacious spirit.

After 30 years, Thomas's daughter sponsored her, enabling her to embark on her educational journey. In the Fall of 2018, she enrolled in a GED program at the SUNY Brooklyn Educational Opportunity Center (BEOC) with the ultimate goal of attending college.

Thomas, described as one of the oldest among her classmates at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC), had a positive experience in the college's Public Health program. With the support of her daughter, she is set to graduate in June 2022, fulfilling a promise made to her daughter years ago.

"A few years ago, I made a promise to my daughter, that one day my college degree would be hanging next to her degree on one of our walls at home. I will get to fulfill that promise in just a few weeks," shared an elated Thomas.

This inspirational achievement underscores the transformative power of education and determination, serving as a beacon of hope for those facing challenges in pursuit of their dreams.
