Make Tax Regime More Friendly - AKSU VC Charges Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria
The Vice-Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Prof. Nse U. Essien has charged the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), to make tax regime more friendly and realistic.

Prof. Essien gave the charge during a courtesy call on him by the Executive of the Body Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at the University Main Campus, Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.
Commenting on the purpose of the visit, the Chairman, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, Uyo and District Society, Elder Godwin J. Owonam explained that the Body considered it important to intimate the University Management of the need to create a tax culture awareness within the University community and to propose the establishment of Tax Club within the University, a platform that would foster the promotion of tax education and awareness among the students.
He added that tax is not an indictment but an obligation of every responsible citizen of the State. Mr. Owonam also appreciated the Vice-Chancellor and his Management team for their impressive achievements in driving academic excellence and infrastructural improvement in the University Community.
In his response, the Vice-Chancellor said that considering the benefits of tax as one of the major sources of revenue for the government, CITN has a responsibility to always intimate government of the need to implement real tax structure and ensure that taxes are geared towards improving the living standard of citizens by providing basic amenities like other countries, as such gestures will encourage a positive response towards taxation.
Prof. Essien emphasised that for adequate application of tax regulations, the average citizen should have better understanding of taxation and how it works. He therefore charged the Body to work on relaxing the stringent tax regime in order to have full implementation and compliance by the populace. He advised the visiting team to liaise with the Head of Campus, Obio Akpa, who is also the Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof. Nkanikpo I. Ibok, as well as the Head, Department of Accounting, Dr. (Mrs.) Eno G. Ukpong with respect to their requests.
Prof. Essien also informed that the University Management is working tirelessly to maintain academic discipline and has achieved full accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in all the 43 Departments; Institutional accreditation for six Engineering Departments by Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN); and Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) accreditation for the Department of Accounting.
In a vote of thanks, Prof. Nkanikpo I. Ibok appreciated the Vice-Chancellor and University Management for their warm reception of the guests. He thanked the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria on behalf of the University Management for the visit and useful deliberations. He further expressed optimism that the commitment of CITN will mitigate irregularities in the Nigerian taxation system thereby enhancing the Nation's economic stability.
