Meet Professor Hajara Ibrahim: Northern Nigeria's First Female Professor of Pharmacy
Professor Hajara Ibrahim is a distinguished Nigerian academic, pharmacist, and researcher who made history as the first female Professor of Pharmacy in Northern Nigeria.
Born on 15 August 1962 in Zaria, Kaduna State, she earned her Bachelor of Pharmacy, Master's degree in Pharmacognosy, and PhD in Pharmacognosy from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, completing her doctorate in 1998.

She joined the academic staff of ABU in 1987 and rose through the ranks to become a Professor in 2006, breaking barriers for women in pharmaceutical academia across Northern Nigeria.
A Professor in the Department of Pharmacognosy and Drug Development at ABU, Professor Hajara has dedicated decades to teaching, research, mentorship, and academic leadership. Her research focuses on medicinal plants, natural products, herbal medicine standardization, hypertension, drug interactions, and drug development.
She has supervised numerous undergraduate and postgraduate students, published over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles, presented more than 40 conference papers, and authored the book Practical Use of Herbs in Pharmacy Practice.
Beyond ABU, she served as Head of the Department of Pharmacognosy and later Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Ilorin during her sabbatical appointment. Her outstanding contributions have earned her several awards in recognition of her excellence in research, academic leadership, and community service.
