Meet UNILORIN's First Female Professor of Islamic Law, Prof. Azizat Omotoyosi Amoloye-Adebayo
She is a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, a Commonwealth Scholar, and the Vice President of the Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows Alumni Association of Nigeria
The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has announced its first female Professor of Islamic Law, Prof. Azizat Omotoyosi Amoloye-Adebayo. She holds an LLB degree in Common and Islamic Law from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, an LLM degree from the University of Ibadan, and a PhD in Sharī‘ah and International Human Rights Law from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom.
Prof. Amoloye-Adebayo is currently the Head of the Department of Islamic Law at UNILORIN's Faculty of Law. Her previous roles include Deputy Director at the University of Ilorin Consultancy Services, Coordinator of the University of Ilorin Muslim Ladies Circle, and Vice Chairperson of the University of Ilorin Muslim Community.
She is a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, a Commonwealth Scholar, and the Vice President of the Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows Alumni Association of Nigeria. Additionally, she is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom, and a Non-Resident Visiting Fellow at ICLARS, Utah, USA (2019-2020). Prof. Amoloye-Adebayo is also an African Humanities Program Fellow with the American Council of Learned Societies (2021) and a Research Fellow at the Research Institute for Theology and Religion, University of South Africa (2022-2025).
Her research interests include Islamic Law, International Human Rights Law, Human Rights Violations, Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Islamic Law of Inheritance, Islamic Family Law, Law and Religion, Gender Issues in Law, and Feminist Theories and Islam. Prof. Amoloye-Adebayo has contributed to and authored chapters in several academic volumes, including "Judicial Dialogue and Human Rights" (Cambridge University Press, 2017), "Achieving Sustainable Energy for All in Africa" (Oxford University Press, 2018), "Law and Religion in the Commonwealth: The Evolution of Case Law" (Hart Publishing, 2022), and the forthcoming "Religion and National Security" (2024).
