Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Set to Reopen After Riot, Re-admittance Conditions Announced

The Federal Government has directed the immediate resumption of academic activities at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) following a violent protest earlier this year. Vice Chancellor, Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, announced that the university would reopen on May 19, with exams restarting on May 27.

In a recent interview, Professor Iwe detailed the timeline for resuming academic activities, explaining that students must meet specific conditions before being allowed back on campus. The conditions stem from a government investigation into the February 6 protest, during which university property was damaged, resulting in significant losses.

Reopening Schedule and Reparation Fee

The Vice Chancellor stated that academic processes for reopening will begin on May 7 and conclude on May 19. All students must pay a reparation fee of N25,000 to cover damage costs incurred during the riot. The payment must be made online through a dedicated account on the university's website. Students will not be allowed on campus without proof of payment.

Additionally, students are required to write a letter of undertaking to maintain good behavior, endorsed by a High Court after swearing an affidavit. This letter must be scanned and sent to the Heads of Departments ahead of the resumption date. On return, students must bring a hard copy of the letter for verification.

- Course Registration: All students must register for their courses, as those involved in the earlier disruption had failed to do so.

- Biometric Capturing: Students who have not completed their biometric capturing must do so between May 20 and 23 at their respective colleges.

- Tuition Payments: Students with outstanding fees must pay at least 70% of their charges for the 2023/2024 session, with the remaining 30% due within the first four to six weeks of the second semester.

Professor Iwe emphasized that the university is committed to providing a safe and conducive learning environment upon reopening. He advised students to focus on their studies and avoid any form of disruptive behavior.

"The university is prepared to give them the best of training. We believe in the best and currency of training so that our students can compete favorably anywhere in the world," he said.

As the institution prepares to welcome back its students, exams will resume on May 27, marking a return to normalcy.
