Babatunde Elizabeth, a recent first-class graduate of Food Science and Technology from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), overcame significant challenges to achieve academic excellence.
In a compelling story of perseverance and transformation, Babatunde Elizabeth, a first-class graduate of Food Science and Technology from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), shares her remarkable journey from aspiring medical doctor to top honors student. Despite facing multiple rejections from medical programs, Elizabeth’s resilience and passion led her to excel in her new field.
Elizabeth’s academic journey began with a dream of pursuing Medicine. Raised in Mushin, Lagos, she excelled in her GCE exams at P&P Comprehensive College but struggled to gain admission into a medical program. After numerous unsuccessful attempts and facing cut-off marks for Medicine and Surgery, Elizabeth reluctantly considered polytechnic education.
In 2012, she enrolled at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, to study Pharmaceutical Technology. Although initially resistant to polytechnic education, her success was undeniable; she graduated with distinction as the top student in her department. Elizabeth’s determination to transition to a university program led her to pursue Direct Entry into Anatomy and Physiology at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), but she faced further setbacks due to filled slots for her state of origin.
Undeterred, Elizabeth completed a one-year internship at Orange Drugs in Lagos and attempted international exams, including the SAT. Although she received an offer from Chicago State University, financial constraints prevented her from attending. Nevertheless, her faith and resolve remained strong.
A passion for cooking and food handling emerged as Elizabeth sought free training in cakes, pastries, and cocktails. This newfound interest led her to obtain certifications and reevaluate her career path. Elizabeth decided to switch from Pharmaceutical Technology to Food Science and Technology, applying for Direct Entry to FUNAAB.
Admitted to FUNAAB for the 2018/2019 academic session, Elizabeth faced the challenge of catching up with first-year students. However, her commitment to excellence and involvement in campus activities, including serving as campus fellowship president, contributed to her success. Elizabeth graduated with a remarkable CGPA of 4.56, securing the second-best position in her department. Alongside two close friends who also achieved first-class honors, she made history as one of the top students in her department.
Reflecting on her journey, Elizabeth acknowledges her initial desire to become a medical doctor and the disappointment of not meeting admission requirements. Yet, these setbacks shaped her resilience and broadened her perspective on opportunities beyond Medicine.
Elizabeth’s time at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic transformed her view of polytechnic education. Despite initial reluctance, she embraced the experience and excelled, which ultimately influenced her decision to pursue Food Science and Technology at FUNAAB.
Her defining moment came when she realized her deep love for food preparation and hygiene, coupled with a passion for ensuring nutritional quality. Elizabeth’s faith played a crucial role in guiding her through challenges, instilling virtues like patience, resilience, and diligence.
Elizabeth’s father has passed away, but her mother’s support and her own faith have been instrumental in her success. Her journey highlights the power of perseverance and the ability to find success and fulfillment in unexpected places.
