NANS Condemns Alleged Brutality of Nigerian Students by Egyptian Police, Urges FG Intervention

NANS Condemns Alleged Brutality of Nigerian Students by Egyptian Police, Urges FG Intervention

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly denounced the reported brutal and unlawful raid by Egyptian police on Nigerian students in Egyptian universities. NANS President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, expressed outrage over the situation and called for the immediate release of all Nigerian students detained unjustly.

In a letter dated January 27, 2024, addressed to Comrade Emonefe, the President of the Nigerian Students Union in Egypt, Comrade AbdulRofiu Saheed, detailed the distressing circumstances faced by Nigerian students in Egyptian universities. Saheed highlighted the forceful raids by Egyptian police resulting in the arrest of students without residency permits.

In response, NANS President Emonefe called on Egyptian authorities to halt the harassment and brutality against Nigerian students and to release those unlawfully detained to prevent potential diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and Egypt. Emonefe emphasized that the detained students had provided evidence of their residency permit applications, making their detention unjustifiable and a violation of diplomatic protocols.

He further urged the Nigerian government to intervene diplomatically to ensure the safety and well-being of Nigerian students in Egypt. Emonefe stressed the importance of education as a platform for international cooperation and called for a thorough investigation into the incident, holding those responsible for the unlawful raid accountable.
