Nasarawa State University Approves Reduction of Damage Fee, Bans Signing Out Ceremonies

Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) has announced a downward review of the damage fee imposed on students following a skirmish after the botched Students Union Government election in September 2024.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sa'adatu Hassan Liman, made the announcement during a meeting with the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone C.

The initial damage fee of ₦5,000 has been reduced to ₦4,500. Professor Liman explained that the penalty was intended to serve as a deterrent to students who participated in the demonstration, but her compassion as a mother figure led to the reduction.

The Vice-Chancellor also addressed the suspension of the Students Union Government elections, citing inconclusive results that could have led to further chaos. A high-level panel of inquiry was constituted to investigate the violence, and the committee's recommendations include introducing an e-voting system in the future.

Additionally, the university management has introduced the Students Representative Council (NSUK-SRC Model) to allow students to choose their representatives. Professor Liman emphasized the importance of dialogue in addressing concerns, rather than confrontational approaches or social media trials.

In another development, the management has banned "signing out ceremonies" to prevent the destruction of morals and infiltration by fraudsters. The representatives of NANS apologized for their past behavior and promised to take the meeting's resolutions back to their constituents.
