National Senior Secondary Education Commission Seeks Funds for Secondary Schools

The Executive Secretary of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) has called upon the Federal Government to allocate the NSSEC Gazette Act 23, specifically the two per cent consolidated revenue fund, in the 2024 Budget. Dr. Iyela Ajayi, the Executive Secretary of NSSEC, made this appeal during a recent visit to key members of the National Assembly in Abuja.

The two per cent consolidated revenue fund is envisioned to provide essential financial support for the enhancement of senior secondary education throughout the country.

In a statement released by NSSEC, Dr. Ajayi emphasized the importance of securing this funding, which would enable the commission to execute vital tasks aimed at revitalizing senior secondary education in line with global standards. These tasks include conducting comprehensive needs assessments in schools across various states, updating the database of senior secondary schools, and enhancing the capacity development of teachers – a critical area that has been hindered due to insufficient funding.

Additionally, Dr. Ajayi revealed that NSSEC, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, is actively working on finalizing the National Policy on Senior Secondary Education. This policy is expected to invigorate the senior secondary education sub-sector by setting essential standards and guidelines.

The commission has also initiated a critique of the minimum standard document, engaging various stakeholders in the process. Once this document undergoes thorough scrutiny and receives widespread acceptance, it will serve as a benchmark for maintaining the minimum standard in the senior secondary education sub-sector.
