Nigeria Police Debunks Rumour About Detained Corps Member in Zamfara

The Nigeria Police Force has addressed and clarified misinformation circulating on social media regarding an alleged incident involving a Corps member detained for punishing a student in Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State. In a Facebook post, the Police Force clarified that the Commissioner of Police intervened thereafter and directed the Corps member’s release.

The Nigeria Police Force has addressed and clarified misinformation circulating on social media regarding an alleged incident involving a Corps member detained for punishing a student in Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State.

According to reports, the incident occurred in 2015 when a female student wrote something the Corps member deemed insulting during a test. In response, the Corps member punished her by asking her to crawl on her knees, causing her some injuries. This punishment did not sit well with the student’s family, prompting them to escalate the matter to the Police. The Area Commander at the time exercised his discretion and temporarily detained the Corps member.

In a Facebook post, the Police Force clarified that the Commissioner of Police intervened thereafter and directed the Corps member’s release. They added, “The matter has since been amicably settled, and there was no further escalation beyond this point.” The police force also addressed the use of an unrelated image circulating alongside the news on social media, clarifying that it has no connection to the actual individuals or events involved in the case.

They emphasized that it was being used to sensationalize and mislead the public. They wrote,“Additionally, the picture currently circulating alongside the news on social media has no connection to the actual individuals or events involved in the referred case. It is an unrelated image being used to sensationalize and mislead the public.”

The Nigeria Police Force urged the public, policing stakeholders, particularly the NYSC body, to disregard the false information being spread in the media as it is not connected to the actual event. They warned against generating and circulating falsehoods to discredit the government, Nigerian institutions, and cause fear among the general public, stating that such actions are not only unpatriotic but also criminal and punishable under the law.

In words, “The Police also wishes to caution, in the strongest terms, those who are bent on generating and circulating falsehood to specifically discredit the government, Nigerian institutions, cause discomfort and create fears in the mind of the general public to desist as such act is not only unpatriotic, but also criminal and punishable under the law.”
