The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), Prof. M. K. Yakubu has expressed readiness to take on a pivotal role as the exclusive producer of combat military footwear for all branches of the armed forces in Nigeria. This declaration came following a recent visit by a delegation from the Defence Research and Development Bureau, led by AVM D. Ladan, who commended NILEST for its exceptional reception and expressed eagerness to enhance collaboration.

AVM D. Ladan highlighted the purpose of the visit, which aimed to explore potential areas of collaboration between NILEST and the Defence Research and Development Bureau. He emphasized the bureau's readiness to revive and strengthen the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) previously drafted between the two agencies. He noted that with NILEST now operating autonomously under legal backing, there are ample opportunities for joint research and development ventures.

In response, Prof. M. K. Yakubu, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NILEST, congratulated the Defence Research and Development Bureau on their recent legal autonomy. He underscored the strides made at NILEST since 2021, particularly highlighting the introduction of research grants that have supported 27 research groups focusing on leather and related fields.


Prof. Yakubu reaffirmed NILEST's commitment to collaboration, citing the institute's capability and preparedness to exclusively produce combat military footwear for the armed forces. This commitment aligns with NILEST's longstanding expertise in leather technology and its mission to advance research and innovation in the field.

The visit concluded with a tour of NILEST's state-of-the-art facilities, showcasing its capabilities in leather research and production. The exchange of gifts further symbolized the mutual commitment to future collaborations between NILEST and the Defence Research and Development Bureau, aimed at enhancing Nigeria's capabilities in military footwear production.
