Northwest University Kano Announces Name Change Following State Government Amendment

The management of Northwest University, Kano, has announced its name change, reverting to its original name, following an amendment to the Yusuf Maitama Sule University Law (2017) by the Kano State Government.

The amendment, dated January 9, 2025, was assented to by the Executive Governor of Kano State, effective December 31, 2024.

According to the university's registrar, Adm. Isyaku Adamu, all internal and external correspondences by staff and students will now bear the name "Northwest University, Kano".¹ The university management will notify relevant stakeholders, including the National Universities Commission (NUC), Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund), Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), about the amendment.

The university's vice-chancellor, Prof. Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa, will oversee the implementation of the name change across the university's properties. The university community has been instructed to comply with the amendment and give the circular the widest publicity.

 

Northwest University, Kano, was established in 2012 as a state-owned public university, with two campuses in Kano.² The university offers various academic programs and has a strong focus on research and community development.
