The Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system championed by the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has had a profound impact on the life of Mr. Lawal Atanda Sharafadeen, winner of the 2023 Edition of the Vice-Chancellor’s Annual Essay Writing Competition. In a live interview on NOUN 105.9 radio station, Sharafadeen shared how the ODL system has transformed him academically, socially, and religiously.

During the interview, Sharafadeen discussed his winning essay titled “ODL at NOUN,” which offered insights into student experiences with the university's unique learning approach. “I have experienced both positive and negative aspects,” he noted, highlighting his love for reading, writing, and engaging in discussions. He emphasized that the university's support had significantly transformed his academic journey, leading him to successfully earn his first degree.

Sharafadeen attributed his success in the essay competition to his passion for academic excellence and his desire to contribute to knowledge. “Upon getting the information on the website, I conducted my research and applied,” he explained. He also acknowledged the crucial assistance he received from colleagues specializing in English, who helped vet his submission.

Reflecting on his educational journey, Sharafadeen spoke candidly about the challenges he faced that led him to discontinue his studies temporarily. However, he expressed deep gratitude for the support he received from NOUN throughout his academic career.

A graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Education (English Language) from the Lagos Study Centre, Sharafadeen went on to pursue postgraduate studies at the Lagos Mainland 1 Study Centre, where he earned a Master of Arts in Islamic Studies.
