NSUK Takes Centre Stage in the Fight Against Malaria, Partners with Federal Ministry of Health and Human Services
.In a landmark move towards achieving a malaria-free Nigeria, the Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) Centre for Malaria Research has agreed to collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Health through the National Malaria Eradication Programme (NMEP) to tackle the scourge of malaria.
The development was announced on Friday, 29th August 2025, when the Vice-Chancellor of NSUK, Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, Fellow; UNESCO, ACLS, FIIFPN, received a delegation from the NMEP at the University’s Council Chamber.
Welcoming the team, Professor Liman expressed her appreciation for the proposed partnership and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to playing a pivotal role in malaria eradication in Nasarawa State and across the nation. She emphasized that institutions of higher learning must leverage their intellectual resources to address pressing health challenges, not only within Nigeria but globally.
Speaking during the visit, the National Coordinator of NMEP, Dr. Nnena Ogbulafor explained that the purpose of the engagement was to establish a strategic partnership with NSUK in the areas of malaria molecular analysis and eradication research. She noted with concern that Nasarawa State alone accounts for about 15 percent of Nigeria’s malaria prevalence, underscoring the urgency of forging collaborations that can translate into tangible solutions.
Dr. Ogbulafor further stressed the need to formalize the collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which will provide a framework for joint research, innovation, and implementation of malaria eradication programmes.
In line with this, the University has constituted a committee to work with relevant organizations to develop a working prototype for combating malaria.
Present at the event was the Director, Centre for Malaria Research, Prof. J.D.C Tongjura, other members of the team include Prof. A.B. Yako, P.I. Nasarawa State, Prof. G. A. Amuga, and the Head of Zoology Department, Assoc. Prof. Hassan Suleiman.
The event concluded with an exchange of souvenirs between NSUK and the visiting delegation, followed by group photographs at the Vice-Chancellor’s Penthouse to commemorate the partnership milestone.
