The National Universities Commission (NUC) has identified parents' emphasis on university certification as a major factor contributing to the rise of illegal degree-awarding institutions in the country.

Maiyaki revealed that a committee was established to eradicate illegal institutions nationwide. He highlighted NUC's efforts, including a resource assessment in 2000 and subsequent closure of satellite campuses, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to identifying and prosecuting operators of illegal institutions.
