Ojukwu University Ag. Vice Chancellor Mobilizes Students for University Tree Planting Day
Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha of Ojukwu University engages student leaders to launch "One Student, One Tree; One Staff, One Tree" initiative ahead of COOU Tree Planting & Climate Summit on July 17, 2024.
In anticipation of the University’s Tree Planting Day on July 17, 2024, Acting Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha fnipr, convened a pivotal meeting with student leaders and advisers on June 14. The assembly featured Faculty Presidents, departmental heads, members of the Student Union Government, and staff advisers from various departments and faculties.
Prof. Omenugha unveiled an ambitious new initiative titled "One Student, One Tree; One Staff, One Tree," with the goal of planting one million trees over the next five years. This initiative, part of the broader "COOU Tree Planting & Climate Summit," aims to plant economic, canopy, and cultural trees to beautify the campus and mitigate sun exposure.
In addition to the tree planting initiative, Prof. Omenugha proposed the formation of a volunteer committee to maintain campus cleanliness and urged students to contribute to a litter-free environment. She also addressed concerns regarding lecturers and course representatives selling textbooks directly to students, mandating that all sales be conducted through the university bookshop with proper stamping.

The student leaders praised Prof. Omenugha’s leadership and vision, particularly her commitment to the "3Vs"—Values, Viability, and Visibility. They lauded her achievements during her seven-month tenure, which include improvements to the school gate, enhanced campus cleanliness, consistent electricity supply, and fostering positive student-faculty relationships. They also acknowledged her efforts to ensure timely class attendance by lecturers.

Pledging their support for the Acting Vice Chancellor’s initiative, the student leaders enthusiastically chanted the slogan, "We need to take back our environment." Prof. Omenugha reaffirmed her dedication to working collaboratively with student leaders to advance the university's development.
The "COOU Tree Planting & Climate Summit" is set to be a landmark event in the university’s history, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement.
