OWSDW Launches Leadership Mentoring Program for Abia Female Science Students

The Organisation of Women In Science for the Developing World initiates a two-year mentoring program for five science students at Girls' Secondary School, Amuzukwu, Umuahia, Abia State, focusing on leadership development.

The Organisation of Women In Science for the Developing World (OWSDW) has chosen five science students from Girls‘ Secondary School, Amuzukwu, Umuahia, Abia State, for a comprehensive two-year mentoring program focused on leadership development.

The announcement was made by Prof. Mabel Onwuka, coordinator of the Umudike chapter of OWSDW, during the commemoration of the 2024 International Day for Women and Girls in Science in Umuahia, Abia State.

Prof. Onwuka emphasized the importance of sustained efforts by key stakeholders in education to encourage female students to pursue science studies and assured that OWSDW would actively support them in achieving their scientific aspirations.

As part of the celebration, the Umudike chapter organized an awareness campaign at the school, settled outstanding fees for some financially disadvantaged students, and distributed educational materials.

Prof. Judith Simoyan, the chapter’s assistant coordinator, highlighted various challenges hindering female students' access to education, including unequal opportunities, fear, lack of role models, and inadequate learning environments.

Mrs. Emilia Odo Kalu, the school principal, expressed gratitude to OWSDW for its unwavering commitment to advancing the education and empowerment of women and girls in the field of science.
